I just returned from Mexico about 3 weeks ago, after spending the past 2 years there teaching ESL in a private institute and individual private classes for all ages and levels. I also ran the institute's internet café computer lab, teaching computer classes in MS Office Products, promoting and expanding all class offerings, and increasing student registrations and retention. I was wholly in charge of my English curriculum, learning objectives, all class materials, scheduling and assessments. I adapted methodology based in the Natural Method to be responsive to students' (and parents') expectations of more didactic set of outcomes as more closely related to the prevailing system used in the great majority of schools. (I am of course, entirely critical of their system and materials, which prevails in the private sector as well, and saw the resulting poor outcomes first hand. In order to assist private students, it was frequently necessary to work on passing exams, so I became highly adept at working with the Cambridge and Toefl materials as well, and outcomes were great!) I developed our study in sync with natural language acquisition according to age / ability appropriateness, as well as designing for multiple intelligences. I approached the task of language using what I understand about Visual Thinking Strategies, theory developed for visual art literacy which transfers easily to language learning. Together, we transformed the expectations of students as to what the possibilities of a learning experience could be within a classroom or class, of the benefits to changing the rigidly established roles of student and teacher, and of the whole process of language learning itself. I was able to apply much of what I learned in Linguistics, Intro to Languages of the World, two years of Ojibwe Language, and Studio Arts at the University of Minnesota, from 1995-2000. I arrived in Mexico not knowing Spanish and began teaching English within 6 months. I empathize with the immigration experience, and not knowing the native language.
Are you, like me, an occasional speaker of French? Etes-vous vraiment fluent et peuvez-vous me rendre tranquille avec votres... uh.... comment dit-on "unemcumbered genius in wielding grammar and vocabulary"? Or are you simply interested in learning more French than yer high school class had to offer?
Come one, come all francophiles as we resurrect the spirit of last year's Frenchy Friday group in a fantastic soiree full of frenchiness... Bring music, food, wine, flamboyant hats, anything that speaks of your love for the language of love, and we will do our best to converse in French all night long.... When we run out of words, i have dictionnaires :o)
I facilitated a conversation class last spring, Frenchy Friday. It was tons of fun. I learned a lot, not the least of which was how very much more French i have to learn before i could mark the "fluent" box on job applications.
