Music

DJ at WMCN 91.7FM
WMCN is looking for community DJs to broadcast alongside Macalester students! WMCN is a free-form, non-commercial, educational radio station serving Macalester College and its surrounding communities. Like many college radio stations, WMCN does not limit itself to any particular genre[s]. Our programming consists of a broad spectrum of music from indepedent record labels and artists, along with a spattering of talk, news, and announcements. Unlike most radio stations of any sort, however, WMCN is a truly freeform broadcast. We have unique weekly programs, each with its own host DJ[s] and theme. For more information about the station, see our website at www.macalester.edu/wmcn
If you would like to join our WMCN family, we encourage you to apply for a show explaining your idea, time availability, ect. Applications are due February 8th at 10PM. Once you have filled out the application, the staff here will do show selection and get back to you about your allotted time-slot. The "class" will consist of a training session over the weekend of February 13th and 14th. Finally, we will begin broadcasting the morning of February 15th. On a weekly basis, you will be responsible for your personal show preparation and the show itself, which you can run however you'd like (as long as it complies with the FCC, of course).
If you want to apply, and/or see what the application process entails, please follow the application link: here.

5-String Banjos!
5-String Banjos! is for people interested in learning how to play the 5-string banjo. You can take this class if you've never touched a banjo or any other musical instrument before. You can take this class if you've played a little bit of banjo but want to learn more. This class is open to people of all ages, ethnicities, genders, and ability levels. Banjos are super fun and you can learn to play them!
If you are taking this course, it's important that you have access to a banjo. You don't need to own your own banjo, but you will need one to practice on and bring to classes. Ask friends, aunts and uncles, and friends' aunts and uncles if they have one you can borrow. There are a lot of unused and forgotten banjos in attics and basements.
This course will meet for eight weeks. We will learn:
- How to tune a banjo
- Playing chords
- Basic clawhammer (old time)
- Dropthumb and double thumb frailing
- Bluegrass rolls
- Playing "up the neck"
- Alternate tunings
- Scales and transposing
- The history of the banjo
- A whole bunch of songs!
We will be using the book The How and Tao of Old Time Banjo by Patrick Costello for parts of this course. You can find the text for free on the internet at: http://www.archive.org/
I look forward to facilitating this course! Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions!

Batucada do Norte - Brazilian Drumming Ensemble

Clarinet Ensemble!
Dust off your old clarinet and come join us! All levels welcome! We play a variety of music and rehearsals are both educational and fun.

Mahadrin Klezmer Ensemble
This band offers a creative outlet for the study, performance, and ultimately, preservation, of klezmer music in a relaxed and non-judgmental, but serious, environment. While some degree of basic musicianship is requested (ability to play by ear and/or sight-read, basic competence on at least one instrument), the group is open to musicians with different levels of musicianship and backgrounds.
Don’t know what klezmer is? Come find out firsthand and learn to play one of the world’s greatest and most quickly evolving musical folk genres.
This is an ongoing course and all of the information provided before is still applicable. The only change for this semester is rehearsal start time. Our rehearsal location may also change. We are hoping to switch to a room in Ferguson Hall at the UofM
